Premature birth risk is genetic, researchers suspect

Premature birth risk appears to be genetic, say researchers after finding early births tend to run in families. Women born prematurely or who have brothers or sisters who were born too early are 50-60% more likely to have a premature baby themselves, they say. The University of Aberdeen study is based on maternity records of 22,343 Scottish mothers and their daughters. Obstetrics & Gynecology journal says the work may help others to predict and plan for these high risk births.

Premature babies ‘more sensitive to pain’, study shows

Premature babies feel pain more acutely than healthy newborns largely due to the invasive hospital treatments they receive, experts believe. Tests at University College London suggest procedures like tube feeding, injections and blood tests make pre-term infants more sensitive to pain. The researchers say better pain relief should be given to premature babies in intensive care.

Premature baby airlifted off ship

A mother and her baby were airlifted from a ferry off the Dorset coast after the woman gave birth prematurely. The Solent coastguard helicopter was alerted by coastguards at Brixham, Devon, when the Pride of Bilbao was about 30 miles from land. The alarm was raised by the ship’s doctor at about 0400 BST. The 38-year-old, from Bognor Regis, West Sussex, was taken to Exeter airport before being transferred to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. The ferry was making its way from Portsmouth, Hampshire, to Bilbao, northern Spain. … The woman, who was on holiday with her family, gave birth 12 weeks early. Her husband, who was also on the ship, will have to remain onboard until it reaches Spain at 0700 BST Monday.
