A common medical condition that a fifth of women may have without knowing it can double the chances of stillbirth, scientists have warned. Research being presented at a conference in America found that women who had fibroids, non cancerous lumps in the womb or surrounding area, were almost twice as likely to have a stillborn child. A study examined the ultrasound results for 64,000 women and compared them with birth records. They found women who had fibroids at the time of their scan, taken between 16 and 22 weeks into their pregnancy, were 80 per cent more likely to have gone on and had a stillborn child.
