When are parenting classes going to become part of high school education. Everyone could benefit form being taught the basics of how to run a home, budget and raise a family. The ones whose parents pass on these skills are going to do fine but what about the rest (The majority? The minority?)?

I caught a bit of the documentary about this issue on Channel 4 last night. They seemed to want to go down the education route first, by convincing the local community that it’s a public health issue.

It is also standard practice in Germany; I remember having this done at every check-up. I’m just shocked to learn that there’s no mention of England! I must ask our dentist about it next time!

I would definitely prefer a healthier option for my children at these attractions. The unhealthy stodge that is usually on offer is not only poor quality, it is overpriced. Sandwiches, wraps, prepared fruit pots would all be much better and more appropriate – the attractions are the treat, not the food. the expensive, unhealthy fare is only a treat for the attraction’s profit margin

Does this mean taking care of your baby so you can get a decent amount of sleep? My theory is that PND is caused by a combination of sleep reduction, sleep interuption and alteration to normal sleeping pattern. Of course there are many other possible reasons.

Before I read the article, my answer was “because it’s fun!”. I probably make as much mess as my children do. It’s all quickly and easily cleaned up while the cakes/scones/biscuits are baking. Then of course the icing sugar comes out… There are plenty of simple baking recipes online that are quick. My friend cheats at scones by using a scone mix that you just add milk to. Crispy cakes or decorating marshmallows which require no real baking or even letting kids make up a packet of angel delight is enjoyable and quick and easy enough for working mums or non-cooking dads to do with their little ones.

Well I’m so glad that when one of my neighbours one year old escaped from their garden that my mum, who was on her way to see me, recognised him and took him home. He was away out of our street by this point and walking along a main road so was at potential risk of being run over. I think the media has us all paranoid. Shame.

I agree. What about the rights of the Midwife who is put in that risky situation, is he/she then at risk of being sued when things go wrong? And yes, some people choose to sue the staff individually rather than taking on the NHS. Why doesn’t everyone just use common sense?

I’ve now read the relevant bits of the guidance, and according to that, only women with a BMI of 30 and over should be encouraged to lose weight straight after the birth. Everyone else can expect a discussion and offer of support at their 6-week check-up. It also says dieting can start around six months after the birth. It even agrees that breastfeeding women should eat slightly more. All in all, it sounds very fair. The only surprising thing was that there is apparently no evidence that breastfeeding helps weight loss, so I guess it just doesn’t work for everyone. I was shocked about the advice to “start dieting soon after giving birth”, after all there are already a lot of women giving up breastfeeding early because they are told they do not produce enough milk, and celebrities who ’snap back into shape’ within weeks of giving birth are usually held up as unhealthy and bad examples. The female body puts weight on during pregnancy for a reason, and I don’t think that reason is dieting for new mums! In my experience, I was constantly hungry while breastfeeding and did eat lots, yet the weight came off anyway and was gone after six months.
However, I looked up the same story elsewhere and neither the BBC nor the Daily Mail mention anything about losing weight straight after birth. Could the Telegraph have made a mistake?

I was told that dieting whilst breastfeeding would prevent my body from producing enough milk and just to eat healthily until my baby stopped breastfeeding altogether. But for all the women who choose to diet straight after birth, please consider taking a daily multivitamin!

Oh dear. Perhaps Masha Bell should ask the Germans if their children have become better at spelling since the German spelling system was ‘reformed’ and ’simplified’ in 1996. Generally speaking, those who couldn’t spell then, still can’t; and those who could spell then, are now unsure.
